To promote awareness of environmental protection on World Environment Day, which falls on June 5, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of the toll humanity is having on Earth.

“We are asking too much of our planet to maintain our unsustainable ways of life. Earth’s natural systems cannot keep up with our demands. The only way forward is to work with nature, not against it,” he wrote on Twitter.

World Environment Day 2022 is hosted by Sweden under the slogan “Only one Earth”, the same slogan of the 1972 Stockholm Conference, the first global conference organized to draw people’s attention towards environmental protection.

Four days ago, leaders, environmentalists, stakeholders, and several decision-makers gathered in Stockholm to celebrate 50 years of the establishment of the 1972 Stockholm Conference.

In his speech at the Thursday gathering, Guterres called upon world leaders to act regarding the environment, demanding to put an end to “a senseless and suicidal war against nature.”
